Imagine if choosing colored contacts was as simple as choosing a shade of paint for your living room? You might just choose your favorite color off the shelf, throw on your new lenses, and get out there ready to impress. Unfortunately, there are factors to consider based on your natural eye color. After all that shade, whether it’s a sky blue or dark brown, will still be back there trying to peer through your new colored lenses. Here are some factors to consider.

Common Issues and Complaints – Colored Contacts for Dark Eyes

I’ll come right out and say it. If you’ve stumbled across this article, chances are you’re looking for a set of colored contact lenses to work with your naturally dark eyes. For those with dark eyes- think brown, or even darker shades of blue and hazel – many colored contact lenses just don’t seem to have much of an effect. A common complaint that we hear is that they simply don’t change much.

The reason for this lies in the difference between enhancement tinted contact lenses and color tint contact lenses. Enhancement tinted lenses are designed to bring out the wearer’s natural eye color. Are they looking to add a little more “pop” to their naturally blue eyes? Is that closet full of green sweaters just not getting people to notice that wonderful shade of green they were born with (or maybe it’s summer now, and another wardrobe replacement is too expensive)? A set of blue enhancement lenses can take a natural blue and do wonderful things with it, making it stand out in a very noticeable way.

Enhancement Lenses Explained

Unfortunately, they aren’t much help for those with naturally dark eyes, and the reason for this is that the enhancement lens is translucent. This means they are designed to allow light, and therefore your sight, to pass through the lens. So when you put on a set of enhancement contact lenses, the color of those lenses is effectively combining with your natural eye color. For someone with naturally light eyes this is wonderful, but for someone with a dark brown, their natural eye color ends up overtaking the desired light blue, green, or hazel. This is why those with dark eyes see such lackluster results with enhancement lenses.

There is Hope for Your Naturally Dark Eyes

But don’t give up yet! As mentioned before, there is another option, and that option is the color tint contact lens. Unlike their translucent brethren, color tint lenses make color contacts for dark eyes possible by providing us with an opaque option that does not allow light to pass through the lenses. In other words, they hide your natural eye color no matter how dark it may be. Think of Gandalf the Grey firmly standing his ground in the danger-filled Mines of Moria, “You shall not pass!”

Just think of all the possibilities – blue, green, hazel, or even grey contacts for those brown eyes, and contacts that actually change, not just enhance the color of your eyes. With the appropriate colored contacts for your dark eyes, you can dramatically change the way you present yourself to the world.

Specific Color Combinations – Choosing the Right Colored Contact Lenses for Your Dark Eyes

Are there some color combinations that work better for those with naturally dark eyes than others? Of course there are! And with all the lenses we sell, and all the customers we hear back from (we really do try to keep in touch as best as we can!), we have some proven recommendations.

You might go for the blue, which as you might guess is our most popular color when it comes to contact lenses, and as long as you’re choosing opaque lenses you won’t have any problems. But why not go for something a little more unconventional like green? Our customers with naturally brown eyes, even the darkest, all swear by the different shades of green that we sell. Somehow green tinted lenses seem to end up looking more natural over dark eyes, even more so than many shades of blue. Naturally, compliments ensue, so on your next order make sure to try at least one shade of green. We bet it won’t be your last!

Of course, grey is always an option, and with the right types of lenses (opaque, even double-tinted), someone with naturally dark brown eyes can easily pull off a pair of grey lenses. Many of our customers like our grey shades because, well, they go with just about anything (and here I thought that was only true about blue jeans!).

Experimentation is Key

The last piece of advice I will leave you with is that experimentation is key. Even with the right type of lens (again – color tint, opaque, or even double-tinted), what works for one customer might not work for another. Aside from natural eye color one must consider anything from hair color to skin tone, and believe it or not, there’s even more to it than that. Sure, I could just be suggesting experimentation so that you purchase more lenses from us, and we’d surely appreciate the business. But it’s really true that the more you experiment with these sorts of things, the happier you’ll be with your choices. And besides, once you find a color that really works for you, and I mean really works, then you can consider yourself set for a long time.

Refresher

With so much information, it’s always good to provide a recap of key points. Plus, if you’re in a rush, you might just scroll down to the bottom anyway. Here it is-

  • When choosing colored contact lenses for dark eyes, make sure that you go for opaque lenses rather than translucent, or enhancement lenses. Opaque lenses are also marketed as color tint, or even double-tinted.
  • Our customers with naturally dark eyes swear by the green. Blues are popular, and will work just as well, but green lenses tend to create a natural look over brown eyes.
  • Experiment! Once you find what really works for you (after all, no one in the world shares your natural eye color to the T), you will never look back.

Happy lens shopping!
